Insidethe rail the vaults are lined with alternate layers of steeland iron, three inches in thickness, fastened by conicalbolts, with heavy nuts inside. The steel plates are so pre-pared that they are positively drill proof, retaining tough-ness and ductility that render them equal proof againstthe sledge and wedge.
