Stratford-Upon-Avon, Warwickshire, UK. 1st April 2017. Pictured: A canoist and her dog float past the new Ferris wheel. /A Ferris wheel opened to the public in Stratford-Upon-Avon today which has divided residents of the historic Warwickshire town. Engineers arrived at the Recreation Ground on the morning of 28th March 2017 to begin the three-day construction project which saw the 35-metre, 144-seater wheel dominate the town's skyline. A sizeable number of residents in William Shakespeare's hometown are furious over the building of the new big wheel that some say could turn Stratford-Upon-Avon 'into another tacky Blackpool'. Since plans were first mooted, protesters savaged proposals to build the 115ft-tall attraction opposite the world-famous RSC Theatre and set up an action group called 'Stop the Wheel' in a desperate bid to have the plan axed. However, the District Council forged ahead with planning permission for the wheel to be built which is the same one that was used in Leicester city centre during Christmas 2015 and 2016, costing £1million. De Koning Leisure Group erected the wheel across the river from the Royal Shakespeare Theatre which will remain on the site for six months. The decision was made despite a survey by the local newspaper that found 69 per cent of respondents were opposed to the project. The wheel will operate from 10am to 10pm each day and carry up to 144 people who will pay £5 each for a ten-minute ride.
