If pursued further, it not infre-quently hides under the leaves. This species was found between the middle of June and themiddle of August in the woods mentioned, but after the latterdate, it was replaced by Blatchleys locust, a closely alliedspecies. On August fourth a number of nymphs were found,which were about to become mature. The life history of thisspecies, like many of our locusts, is still unknown. At one time,July thirteenth, I found a female on a rotten stump and possiblyit was laying its eggs there. ECOLOGY —INTERPRETATION OF ENVIRONMENT 407. Green-legged Locust (Melanophis viridipes). The green-striped locust, Chortophaga viridifasciata, is one of the firstto mature in the spring from the nymph that has passed throughthis cold period.
