St. Peters-in-the-East Church, one of the mostancient and interesting churches in the city. The fine NormanCrypt (36 ft. by 21 ft. and 10 ft. in height) appears to be of earlierdate than the chancel over it {c. 1150). The nave retains on theS. side and at the W. end its original Norman wall up to a certainheight; but great alterations were made at a later date, com-mencing on the N. side in the latter half of the 13th century. * See the notes on Old Oxford, appended to our Shilling edition. In the gardensare some rare trees, among them specimens of the Catelpa and the Cut beard Alder,.
