Pascal's calculator. Historical artwork showing the mechanism inside a 17th Century mechanical device used to perform mathematical calculations. This device was invented in 1642 by the French mathematician Blaise Pascal (1623-1662). Known as the Pascaline, it used cogged wheels to perform additions and subtractions. Published in 1668.
