She meant to build up a mightyempire in the valley of the Mississippi,extending from the great lakes to the Gulfof Mexico, and touching Canada. Her effortsto accomplish this were lavish and persistent,but the unhealthiness of the climate, and thealmost constant wars with the Natchez andChickasaw Indians disheartened the settlers,and the French population grew so slowlythat it could not accomplish the destinydemanded of it by the government at late as 1740 Louisiana contained onlyabout five thousand
