Y., 10 March,Be was graduated at Amherst in 1884, andat Andover theological seminary in 1838. Mean-while he had become professor of natural sciencein Phillip- Andover academy, where he remaineduntil 1843, after which, in 1844-5, he was professorof chemistry in Marietta college. In 1845 he be-came a teacher in the Brooklyn heights femaleacademy, and six years later founded the Brooklyn. yi~^ &Jh^-<^<iy heights female seminary, of which he was princi-pal until his death. Adams, Elements of Geology (1852). GRAY, Asa, botanist, b. in Paris, Oneida co.,N. Y., 18 Nov., 1810. He received his early edu-cation in the Clinton grammar-school and in theFairfield academy, after which he began the studyof medicine with Dr. John F. Trowbridge inBridgewater, N. Y., and was graduated at the Col-lege of physicians and surgeons of the western dis-trict of New York in 1831. He soon left his prac-tice and began the study of botany with Dr. JohnTorrey. In 1834 he was appointed botanist to theU. S. exploringexpedition sentout under thecommand ofCapt. CharlesWilkes, but, inconsequence ofthe delay ofthat enterprise,resigned thepost
