Only a few years ago this structurewas standing on the farm of Isaac Rowley, near the city. Inthe summer of 1838 the trustees began the erection of a framestructure on the west side of North First street, on a site nearthe residence of Irving French. When the building had beenenclosed and shingled it was learned that Messrs. Kent andBrinckerhoff had obtained about eight hundred dollars fromfriends in New York, for a church. Instead of turning over thismoney to the society to complete the church, these gentlemenbuilt an edifice on their own side of the river.
