The Bullet Tree at the Holy Monastery of Arkadi near Rythymno on the island of Crete. The tree is a relic from the 1886 battle against the Turks. In 1886 a three day battle against the Turks centred on the monastery. 943 Greeks, mostly women and children, took refuge in the monastery. The Greeks locked themselves in a cellar where gunpowder was stored. The end came when when the Turkish soldiers were at the door of the powder hegumen (abbott) ordered that the gunpowder be resulting explosion not only klled all those inside but also many of the Turkish troops trying to capture the cellar.
