IMPERIAL BEACH, (October 5, 2018) The Army Maj. William Roy Ream memorial plaque located at the air traffic control facility entrance onboard Naval Outlying Landing Field (NOLF) Imperial Beach (IB). The site is home to Ream Field and was commemorated during a ceremony which observed 100 years of military flights at the airfield Oct. 5, 2018. Maj. Ream was the first flying surgeon of the Army and the first flight surgeon killed in an aircraft accident. The helicopter squadrons stationed at Naval Air Station North Island (NASNI) use Ream Field at NOLF IB for 95 percent of their flight operations. NASNI and NOLF IB are branches of Naval Base Coronado’s consortium of eight Naval installations stretching from San Clemente Island, located 70 miles west of San Diego, to the La Posta Warfare Training Facility, located 60 miles east of San Diego. The bases’ mission is to support and train America’s heroes.
