The members of thiscompany were enlisted from the men of the regular oath administered to them, when Charley Briggs pro-ceeded to schwear him mit der schtate, was an obligationthat none but those of the best mettle would dare take, and sothe Dutch Company never became very large. Cosper usedto subject his company to regular drills, and these occasionsfurnished fun enough for the whole village, with plenty tospare. Surely no one who saw Capt. Cosper put his menthrough their evolutions can ever forget it. The tendency of this drill was to burlesque in a humorousway the rather strict discipline of the regular military tactics,. CAPT ABRAHAM VANDERPOEL, COMPANY E. and at the same time afford the boys a gentle laxative afterLieutenant Gillispie had held them pretty rigidly in checkduring the day. It has been truly said that, All work and noplay makes Jack a dull boy; and I doubt not that the funthe boys had when off duty not only kept them from dullness,but fitted them for better discipline in their proper work assoldiers. I am of opinion that jollity and merriment held full sway inNewmans big bedroom, also, yet I do not recollect to haveheard so much about it. If I remember rightly, however, allthe real good deacons of the company, excepting Fosbinderwere sent to board at Newmans, where they would find them-selves less liable to mischief.
