220214-N-EV253-1085 SAN DIEGO (Feb. 14, 2022) – Eighteen Sailors assigned to the “Merlins” of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 3 are awarded Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals by Commander, Naval Air Forces, Feb. 14. Eleven Navy Air Medals and four Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals were also awarded to other HSC-3 Sailors for exemplary volunteer action in support of nighttime aerial firefighting operations while battling the fire aboard the former USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) on July 12, 2020. In total, HSC-3 executed 1,649 aerial drops, resulting in 545,076 gallons of water

Eleven Navy Air Medals and four Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals were also awarded to other HSC-3 Sailors for exemplary volunteer action in support of nighttime aerial firefighting operations while battling the fire aboard the former USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) on July 12, 2020. In total, HSC-3 executed 1,649 aerial drops, resulting in 545,076 gallons of water dropped on Bonhomme Richard, and flew a combined flight hours amongst 26 crews.
