Tourists watching a Spotted Hyena lying lazily in the middle of the road, Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania: The Ngorongoro was first established as a conservation area to benefit the Masai. The NCAA's motivation for promoting walking safaris is primarily an ecological one. Tourism is having negative ecological impacts within the Ngorongoro Crater stemming from excessive vehicular traffic on the Crater floor. A substantial increase of the crater fee introduced in 2006 might hopefully be an appropriate tool managing the traffic on the crater floor.
