Great Sphinx of Giza, Egypt, c1890. A portrait statue of the 4th dynasty Pharaoh Khafre (Chephren) in the form of a sphinx, a mythical creature with a lion's body and human head. It dates from the 26th century BC. The Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops), Khafre's father, can be seen behind the Sphinx. Lantern slide.
