Thalower is adjusted so that the foot of the splint will stay inany position in which it is put, and makes it an easymatter to raise or lower it for dressings. I have severaltimes been astonished at the way in which a case whichwas doing badly ou a fixed splint immediately started toimprove when slung in this way. In operating, the wound is regarded as consisting of twodistinct portions—the extra-articular, where infection ia. The extra-articular wound is accordingly cleaned and drained, thearticutation is cleaned, closed, and allowed to fight its ownbattle.
