Comparing two foetuses. At top, an artwork of a 5-month-old foetus after the expectant mother was injured, leading to a thinner than expected foetus. At bottom, the amniotic sac, umbilical cord, and placenta (blood vessels, left, red) for a healthy 5-month-old foetus. This anatomical artwork is plate 331 from volume 5 of 'Manuel d'anatomie descriptive du corps humain' (1825). This 5-volume anatomy atlas was produced by French physician and surgeon Jules Germain Cloquet (1790-1883). The illustrations were by Haincelin. Volume 5 illustrated the anatomy of the digestive, secretory and reproductive organs.
