Card in the presi-dency of the Cache Stake of Zion. 1890, he was set apart by PresidentWilford Woodruff as president of theStake, which position he held until 1899. 3fORRELIj, Joseph, president ofthe Cache Stake of Zion, was born inLondon, England, Feb. 11, 1856, son ofThomas Merrill and Selina emigrated to Utah with his parentsand became a resident of Logan, Cachecounty; was baptized July 2, 1868, byFrederick W. Hurst, and subsequently ordained an Elder. In his youngeryears he worked on the farm, and inthe canyons, logging for saw mills,burning coal, working on brick yardsand doing almost anything which hecould find to do. His education wasvery limited. His father being sick. ten years, Joseph had to assist in sup-porting the family from the time hewas sixteen until he was twenty-sixyears old. From June, 1876, to Septem-ber, 1879, he worked for the W. O. B. Co. of Logan as clerk in the 20, 1879, he married MargaretRowland, with whom he has had sevenchildren. From 1879 to 1882 he workedin the wholesale department of Z. C. , in Logan, after which he went intobusiness with Robert L. Campbell—abusiness which they are still carryingon. From 1880 to 1883 he was an offi-cer in the Y. M. M. I. A. In 1883-84,he filled a mission to the SouthernStates, laboring principally in the Stateof Mississippi. After his return he wascalled to labor as acting Bishop of theThird Ward in Logan, filling that posi-tion from 1885 to 1888, after which heacted as second counselor to the presi-dent of the High Priests quorum andas a High Councilor in the Cache Stakeof Zion.
