Proceedings - Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society. ved in theIsle of Purbeck up till that time, considerable andmost satisfactory progress lias been made with thework, and the result of recent researches has evenexceeded all expectation. ]STot only have numer-ous fresh localities for species already recorded been noted, butmany neiv and rare insects have been captured, of which aconsiderable number had not previously been observed in Dorset;and special attention must be drawn in passing to such great prizesas Anosia Plexippus, Plusia Ni, Crambus Alpinellus, EupceciliaPallidana, Diplodoma Marginepunctella, Acrolepia Marcidella,Cosmopteryx ScJtmidiella, Chauliodus Insecurellus, PteropliorusPaludwn, and P. Spilodadylus. In the former paper we enumerated 879 species of Lepidopteraas occurring in Purbeck, and in the following supplement we arevery pleased to be able to give the names of 156 additional species(exclusive of all local varieties and substituted species), thus bring-ing up the total number to 1,035. If it be remembered that, at. 198 LEPIDOPTEEA OF THE ISLE OF PURBECK. the present time, only 2,102 different kinds of butterflies andmoths are known to exist in the British Isles, the peculiar richnessof the insect fauna of Purbeck will be the more readily appreciated;and we much doubt whether any similar district of such verylimited area can boast of such an extensive list. It should here be stated that both in the former List, as well asin the present Supplement, the Rev. C. R. Digby and myself areentirely responsible for all the records given; for, unless otherwisestated, the various captures have, in almost every instance, beenmade by ourselves. This statement was not made in the originalpreface because we assumed that it would be taken for granted;but such has not always been the case (vide Entomologist, xix.,p. 95). —Species marked thus * have not previously been recordedfrom the county of Dorset.
