At Wittenberg he addedHebrew to his acquirements, and with this equip-ment of scholarship, he became, in 1524, Rector ofthe High School at Magdeburg—an institutionwhich owed its origin to Gerard Groot, the Flemisheducationist, and in which, it will be remembered,Martin Luther was at one time a scholar. After three years spent in teaching, Cruciger wasinvited to return to his Alma Mater, that there hemight preach and expound the Scriptures. When 76. GASPER CRUCIGER. Gaspar Cruciger settled in Wittenberg he devoted himself to thestudy of several branches of natural science, and incourse of time he became proficient in geometry,optics, astronomy, and medicine. To his other accomplishments the versatile pro-fessor added that of wielding the pen of a ready andswift writer. Crucigers dexterity as a reporter wasturned to good account on various occasions andin various ways. Thus, at a Conference whichCharles V. arranged for at Worms in 1540-41, inorder that an understanding with the Protestants ofGermany might be arrived at, Cruciger was calledupon to report the Disputation, which he did withsuch expedition and accuracy that the Royal Com-missioner was overheard saying, The Lutheranshave a clerk that is more expert than all the Papists. Then, being on terms of intimacy with Luther,Cruciger frequently took notes of his sermons andof his conversation.
