Atlanto-occipital joint. Artwork of the bones (yellow) and ligaments (blue) of the atlanto-occipital joint, as seen from the side in a medial sagittal section. The rear of the spine is at right. This joint is between the occipital bone at the rear base of the skull, and the atlas bone, the first cervical vertebra. The axis bone (second cervical vertebra) is also shown. At right are the bony vertebral processes, while at upper left is the basilar part of the occipital bone. The space at centre is the foramen magnum. The ligaments at left include the anterior atlantooccipital membrane and the anterior atlantoaxial ligament.
