Eros statue, Piccadilly Circus, London, UK. This statue was unveiled in 1893 as part of the Shaftesbury Monument Memorial Fountain. The statue actually depicts Eros's twin brother Anteros, but the incorrect name is more widely used. It was made from aluminium by the English sculptor and goldsmith Alfred Gilbert (1854-1934). The rest of the fountain (partly seen at bottom) is made from bronze. This statue was the first in the world to be made from aluminium, which had recently become much cheaper due to new industrial production processes. Eros and Anteros were the Greek gods of love and unrequited love.
