Bloc_10, Winnipeg, Canada. Architect: 5468796 Architecture, 2012. Detail of timber facade.
Bloc_10 is an affordable housing project located in Winnipeg, Canada, and the joint winner of the 2012 International Emerging Architecture Award, curated by the UK's Architectural Review. Designed by Canada's 5468796 Architecture, the three story building employs simple materials to reduce costs to a minimum while at the same time challenging expectations of this typology. The black timber slatted cladding creates complex light patterns, appearing either transparent or opaque depending on the point of view. Inside, the formulaic layout of units leading off a dark central corridor has been comprehensively abandoned - all the apartments interlock and have their own ground level front door, with live, eat and work spaces intersected by a three floor internal stair.
