An old engraving of a patient having his larynx examined by a doctor using a laryngoscope. It is from a Victorian mechanical book of the 1880s. Laryngoscopy is endoscopy of the larynx, part of the throat in order to view the vocal folds and the glottis. Many versions of the apparatus were invented in the 1800s. The one illustrated is a Tieman laryngoscope. An artificial light source (left) shines onto the concave mirror the doctor holds and is reflected down the patient’s mouth onto a smaller mirror on the end of the instrument inserted into the mouth, illuminating the area for inspection.

Similar machines were also later able to take photographs of this part of the throat.
