He received his early educa-tion in the national schools of his native land;At the age of twenty-one he left home andfound employment in the Merchants Ex-change in Liverpool, England. After workingthere some five years be determined to makehis home in America and in 1868 settled inLowell, Massachusetts. He was employed. MIDDLESEX COUNTY. 1621 during his first year in this city by JohnButcher as gardener. During the next fiveyears he worked for the firm of Winter &Smith, marble cutters, on Central street. In1875 he struck out for himself the shippingbusiness, in which he had had some experiencein Eiverpool and he made rapid advancementin his business, representing after a short timeall the principal trans-Atlantic steamship lines,the Cunard, White Star, American, Allan,French, German and Italian companies. Hebuilt up a large banking business as well, issu-ing drafts on all foreign countries. Mr. Mur-phy achieved an enviable position among themen of influence and financial standing in thecity of Lowell. His uprightness in businesswas the foundation of his well-earned fortune,and his integrity inspired the confidence of histownsmen of every walk in life. He was adirector of the
