Cytoskeleton. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the cytoskeletons of human skin cells. Cell nuclei are yellow. The rest of the cells' contents have been biochemically extracted. The cytoskeleton is made up of three types of proteins; actin filaments, microtubules and intermediate filaments. The cytoskeleton maintains the cell's shape, allows some cellular mobility and is involved in intracellular transport. Magnification: x32,500 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
