Cruise ship tourists disembarking onto Pleneau Island, Wilhelm Archipelago, Antarctica with mountainous Booth Island in the background.
Pleneau Bay lies south-west of mountainous Booth Island at the bottom of the Lemaire Channel. It's popular with cruise ships due to the large number of icebergs trapped there - "iceberg graveyard" - providing good viewing conditions for seals and penguins. A small island of the same name off the top of Hovsgaard Island hosts a Southern Gentoo (Pygoscelis papua ellsworthi) penguin colony. Gentoos tyypically nest on ice-free, low lying ground near the coast. The nest is made from a pile of stones. Southern Gentoo are endemic to the Antarctic Peninsula and surrounding islands.
