Cataract surgery. Image 2 of 4. Close-up of a surgeon's hands removing the lens from the eye of a patient with a cataract. It is being removed by phacoemulsification. A probe (centre left) is inserted into the lens chamber. This emits high frequency sound (ultrasound) which breaks up the lens, allowing it to be sucked out through the probe. An artificial lens is then inserted in its place. A cataract is a loss of transparency of the lens of the eye. It is very common in old age, and is considered part of the ageing process. It leads to a gradual loss of visual acuity (sharpness) and increasing short-sightedness. For a sequence of the complete procedure, see images M570/133-136.
