William Henry Eccles (1875-1966), British physicist, electrical engineer and pioneer of radio communications. Eccles studied the transmission of radio waves in the atmosphere, writing about what later became known as the ionosphere, a layer in the atmosphere that reflects radio waves. Eccles later worked on early computer memory technology, as well as the early development of the BBC (British Broadcasting Company). He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1921. Eccles was President of the Institution of Electrical Engineers in 1926. Portrait from 'History of the Institution of Electrical Engineers 1871-1931' (Appleyard, 1939).
