KNEE JOINT. 149 Ffg. 72.*. JExternal lateral ligaments.—The long external lateral ligament isa strong rounded cord, which descends from the posterior part of thetuhercle upon the external condyle of the femur to the outer partof the head of the fihula. The short external lateral ligament is anirregular fasciculus situated behind thepreceding, arising from the externalcondyle near the origin of the head ofthe gastrocnemius muscle, and insertedinto the posterior part of the head ofthe fibula. It is firmly connected withthe external semilunar fibro-cartilage,and appears principally intended to con-nect that cartilage with the fibula. Thelong external lateral ligament is coveredin by the tendon of the biceps, and haspassing beneath it the tendon of originof the popliteus muscle, and the inferiorexternal articular artery. The true ligaments within the jointare the crucial, transverse, and coro-naiy. The anterior, or external crucialliga-ment, arises from the depression uponthe head of the tibia in front of thespin
