A view from a balcony on a busy street in downtown Bridgetown, Barbados in 1963. The architecture is a mix of old Colonial and modern. A red, open-sided Transport Board bus passes the Colony Store – evidence of the ties with the British Empire. Further down is a ‘Five and Ten’ store. This is a variety store (often a ‘five and dime’, a pound shop, or dollar store). It is a shop selling goods at discounted fixed prices, such as a dollar or five or ten cents or pennies. This image is from an old amateur 35mm colour transparency – a vintage 1960s photograph.

A view from a balcony on a busy street scene in downtown Bridgetown, Barbados in 1963. The architecture is a mix of old Colonial and modern. A red, open-sided Transport Board bus rounds the corner past the Colony Store – evidence of the country’s ties with the British Empire. Further down the street is a ‘Five and Ten’ store. This is a variety store (often a ‘five and dime’ store in the USA, or a pound shop, or dollar store). It is a retail store that sells general merchandise, usually at discounted prices, sometimes at one or more cheap fixed price points, such as one dollar, or historically, five or ten cents or pennies. These were made famous by Frank Woolworth, who opened his first ‘Great Five Cent Store’ in Utica, New York, USA in 1879. This image is from an old amateur Kodak 35mm colour transparency. It will look soft and grainy if used at too large a size – a vintage 1960s photograph.
