He wasin the naval service till his uncle, David Porter,was sent as minister to the Porte in 1832, when heaccompanied him abroad, and giving his attentionto the study of Oriental literature, achieved a highreputation. In various capacities he spent fortyyears in Turkey, during the last fourteen of whichhe was secretary of legation, and a jjortion of thetime charge daffaires. He published Dervishes, orOriental Spiritualism (1858); Turkish En-tertainments, a translation from Ahmed Ben Hem-den; and Ancient and Modern Constantinople, also atranslation. Georgia, was born in Piclcens County, South Caro-lina, April 15, 1821; graduated at Yale in 1846, andbecame a lawyer in Geor-gia.
