Brian Harold May (born 1947), British rock musician and astrophysicist, performing at the concert held as part of the Starmus Festival in June 2011, on La Palma in the Canary Islands. May is a guitarist for the rock band Queen. In 2007 he earned a PhD in astrophysics from Imperial College, London, 30 years after he first began it, with the thesis 'A Survey of Radial Velocities in the Zodiacal Dust Cloud'. In 2005, he was made Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to the music industry and for his charity work. Since 2008, he has been Chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University.
