Strong Storms Over Oklahoma, 2013


This is an image (taken on May 21, 2013) from NASA'S Aqua MODIS satellite of the storm system that generated the F-4 tornado in Moore, Oklahoma. The image was captured at 19:40 UTC (2:40 CDT) as the tornado began its deadly swath. Overall, severe weather associated with the storm was responsible for 29 fatalities (25 from tornadoes) and nearly 400 injuries in the United States. Additionally, damage was estimated to amount to $2-5 billion, making it one of the costliest severe weather events on record.
