MEMORANDUM OF A PARTIAL EXAMINATION OF THE IMPURI-TIES IN THE AIR ON BOARD THE ALLIANCE. 1 a. Suspended matters.—One of the small glass tubes in tlietest-case is bent twice ni)on itself in a spirit-lami) flame and thecurved portion immersed in a mixture of ice and salt. Oneend is attached by a rubber tube to the syringe of the stomach-pump, which has a capacity (on this ship) of cubic Air is then drawn slowly through the tube by means of thesyringe, until a i)erceptible drop of condensed water appears inthe curve of the tube in the freezing-mixture. A drop of waterthus condensed from the air of the sick-bay of the Alliance, inthe forenoon, and examined with a Wales \ objective (about300 diameters), showed epithelium, cotton and wool fibres, andfine amorphous particles not identified. No spores or organiccells large enough to be recognized under this low power werefound. h.
