She continuesto exhibit pronounced physical and mental lethargy. She hasthe ways of a child less than three years old, and will sit aroundthe house all day, evincing interest in nothing, although she un-derstands a good deal of what is said to her concerning the thingsof the house. She talks with a peculiar hoarse intonation, is. DYSTROPHIC CONDITIONS OF INFANCY 17 easily frightened, is very sensitive to the cold, and most of thetime has cold extremities. Her appetite is habitually poor andshe is generally constipated. She has not grown in height sinceshe was three years old. Physical examination shows a child appearing no morethan two and a half to three years of age, with thecharacteristic appearance of a cretin : a dwarfed but well formedbody, a physiognomy with an idiotic expression, thick lips,open mouth, large protruding tongue, eyelids thick and puffy, andskin pale, dry and edematous. The hair on the head is fairlyabundant, light brown in color, and dry. The head is sym-metrical, rounded, cm. (19J^ inches) in circumference, thefontanelles are closed, and the forehead is slightly bulging. Thereare 20 teeth in good condition, all of the primary set with the ex-ception of the two lower central incisors.
