King,one of the most prominent among thephysicians and surgeons of the Iron was born in Washington county,Pennsylvania, in 1839, the youngest butone, in a family of twelve children bornto Dr. Samuel M. King and Maria(Black) King. The parents were bothnatives of Western Pennsylvania. Hispaternal grandfather, Samuel, was a na-tive of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, of Scotch-Irish descent, and the advent of the fam-ily to the Keystone State antedates theRevolutionary War. Samuel King wasa merchant of Carlisle. He moved toUniontown, Fayette county, near theclose of the past century, becoming oneof the first merchants of that place anda man of note in the community.
