Illustration of the male genitalia. The penis is comprised mainly of columns of erectile tissue, the corpus cavernosum (left, purple) and corpus spongiosum, located on both sides of the urethra (yellow). The organ is crowned by a knob-like glans (green). The columns are highly vascular & become engorged with blood during erection. The urethra conveys both urine & semen. Above the root of the penis it passes through the prostate, where it is joined by the vas deferens, the route of sperm produced in the testes (yellow). Each testis is capped by an epdidymis, where sperm mature before being discharged into the vas deferens, which loops around to join the urethra at top.
