The Rivals - painted by J. Sant, 1850. Exhibition of the British Institution. 'The scene is on the ice. The object of the Rivals is a coquettish little lady, in her sledge, with a pet dog resting at her feet, upon a costly carpet. One of the suitors, a skater, has evidently, for the moment, gained the fair one's eye, but is jealously watched by the rival suitor, who drives the sledge. The composition is good, and the picture is painted with much breadth and richness of colour'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850.
