Aghlalurcher church was probably built in the 6th or 7th century on the site of a pre-Norman monastery. In medieval times this was a church or some importance serving a large parish in the heart of Maguire territory. Members of the family appear in "The Annals of Ulster" here as clergy and was their chief burial site. Aghallurcher has seen violent times. The 15th and 16th century annals tell of men killed at the alter and at the gate and being taken prisoner in violation of sanctury. The church fell into ruin in the 17th century but the graveyard remains in use to this day.
