Brain haemorrhage, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan. A small mass of blood (haematoma, white) is seen at centre left. Bleeding (haemorrhage) in the brain occurs when a blood vessel, such as an artery, ruptures. It may be caused by a head injury, high blood pressure or vascular disease. The area of the brain supplied by the ruptured artery may die due to lack of oxygenated blood, leading to a stroke.
