The Gu-byauk-gyi Temple is a historic Buddhist temple situated in Nyaung-U, a town near the ancient city of Bagan, Myanmar. It dates back to the 13th century and is renowned for its intricate architectural designs and extensive mural paintings. Constructed under the patronage of Prince Yazakumar shortly after his father, King Kyansittha's death, this temple is considered a significant monument in the study of the country's religious and cultural heritage. It is particularly known for its well-preserved frescoes, which cover the interior walls and ceilings. The murals in the Gu-byauk-gyi Temple are recognized as some of the oldest and finest examples of Bagan-style mural paintings. These paintings primarily depict scenes from the Jataka tales, stories about the previous lives of the Buddha. They provide valuable insights into the religious beliefs, artistic styles, and cultural practices of ancient Myanmar. The temple's architecture is equally noteworthy. It is built in the Mon style, characterized by a rectangular plan with a large porch, a square main hall, and a smaller antechamber. The exteriors are adorned with intricate stucco carvings, featuring a variety of motifs such as mythical creatures, floral patterns, and scenes from everyday life. Gu-byauk-gyi Temple is also notable for its massive pyramidal spire and its imposing height, which offers a commanding view of the surrounding plains. The temple is built of red brick, a common building material in Bagan, and its weathered appearance adds to its historical charm.
