GEORGE MORRIS WOODRUFF, Judge ofProbate of Litchfield District, Connecticut,was born in Litchfield, March 3, 1836, son of GeorgeCatlin Woodruff, a well known member of the Con-necticut Bar, and Henrietta Sophronia is of old Puritan stock through both his mothers and fathers side. He received his earlyeducation in private schools in Litchfield and fittedfor College at Phillips Academy at Andover, Massa-chusetts, graduating from Yale with the Class of1857 and receiving the degree of Master of Arts incourse. He studied law for a time with his fatherand at the Harvard Law School, and was admittedto the Litchfield County Bar in 1859. He has al-ways resided at Litchfield, though while RailroadCommissioner, 1874 to 1897, he was not in activepractice. Judge Woodruff has always been a stanchDemocrat in politics. He has been Town Treas-. GEO. M. WOODRUFF urer since i860; was Town Clerk for a number ofyears ; served in the General Assembly of the Statein 1863, 1865 and 1872; was Commissioner fromConnecticut to the L^niversal Exposition at Ham-burg in 1863; a member of the State Board ofEducation from 1865 to 1877, and since 1868 hasbeen Judge of Probate of Litchfield District. He isalso President of the First National Bank of Litch-field, President of the Litchfield Savings Society andTreasurer of the Litchfield Mutual Fire InsuranceCompany, and is a prominent figure in all that tendsto the betterment of the town. He married, June13, i860, Elizabeth Ferris Parsons. They havethree children : George Catlin, Eliza Parsons andJames Parsons Woodruff.
