Ancient Egyptian. Group of Checkerboard Patterned Inlays. 100 BC–1 BC. Italy. Glass, mosaic technique Mosaic glass was made of bundles of colored glass rods that were arranged in a pattern then fused together with heat into a solid cane. The cane was reheated and stretched to make a smaller compact design. Many nearly identical pieces could be cut from a single cane and then formed into inlays. This style of glass mosaic, with its tiny checkerboard patterning, appeared as early as the 4th century on decorative hieroglyphs inlaid intocoffins.
