Philip Koempel was born in Wiesbaden,Germany, in March 1840. He received aliberal education and came to this countryat the age of seventeen. In 1859 he wentto New Haven, Conn., to learn the woodcarving trade. In response to the firstcall for troops for three months he en-listed in Company B, First ConnecticutVolunteers (Bridgeport Rifles). Was atthe first battle of Bull Run, July 21, re-enlisted October 15, 1861 in Com-pany B, First Connecticut Cavalry andwas promoted to Corporal March 1, 1863 and to Sergeant May 21, 1864. InFebruary, 1862,.he served with his battal-ion under General Fremont in the Shen-andoah campaign, taking part in thebattles of McDowalls Station, Cross Keysand the night attack on Ashbys Cavalryat Strasburg, Va. Coming under GeneralPopes command he participated in thebattles including Cedar Mountain, Water-loo Bridge and thesecond battle of BullRun.
