It wasm 11 ^^ during his reign that one of the Highland chiefs or thanes named%^ 11 %y Banquho (who is said to have been the founder of the House ofSteward), made a rising in Lochaber, which Macbeth, being sentagainst by King Duncan, successfully put down. Macbeth was also sent to repel aninvasion of the Norwegians, in which the Scottish arms were again victorious underhim. Macbeth, now feeling his power, slew King Duncan, and usurped the throneof Scotland. For some time after being crowned he governed well, but ultimately histyranny became so oppressive and cruel that many of the leading men of the realm,who detested the usurper, were driven out of Scotland or obliged to fly. Macbeth,having established and built his stronghold at Birnam near Dunkeld, which is onlya few hours ride
