Roman city of Herculaneum, located in modern-day Ercolano, near Naples, Italy. Herculaneum was destroyed in the eruption of the volcano Vesuvius in 79 AD. However, the thick layer of volcanic ash that buried the town preserved buildings, bodies and other artefacts that were later excavated. This view shows both the excavated areas of the Roman settlement (across bottom), and the modern settlement (across top) that has been built over these remains.
