The Founding Conference of the Iraqi Assembly of Islamic Unity is held in Baghdad with the intent to support unity among Islamic nations in spite of the various Islamic denominations and the current Shia-Sunni tensions. It has been organised and supported by Iran and was attended by Iranian and Iraqi Senior officials as well as a number of Sunni and Shiite clerics from different countries, including Syria, Egypt, Libya, Qatar, Lebanon, Iran, and Iraq. Within the conference it was also discussed the issue of the so-called “Shia crescent”, stretching from Iran to Lebanon, and how to preserve it.
