As a passenger leaves the car he finds but one handle totake hold of, and that is on the side which prompts him to facetoward the forward end of the car as he steps down upon therunning board and so to the ground; thus a common source ofdanger is abolished. This point is of great impor-tance, since, were the fan of the ordinary three spindle design, thecenter of gravity would be some distance out from the bearing andthere would be the tendency of the shaft to move on the fan bear-ing as a fulcrum and cause an upward thrust in the engine and onthe engine journal caps. With the single spider this trouble is notencountered. The engine is of the enclosed type, oiled by a recently devisedpump which distributes oil to all of the reciprocating and revolvingparts, even lubricating the eccentric outside of the frame.
