It would be most interesting to trace fully the sym-bolism of the serpent, but the phallic idea is the onlyone appropriate to the present work. The serpent having been recognized as a sacredanimal or emblem, it would, as a matter of course, becarefully studied, and all its jjeculiarities closely ob-served.
