Hans Holbein the Younger (1497-1543) was an outstanding artist of German Renaissance. He spent early half of life in Basel, where he was friends with Erasmus, whose Praise of Folly he illustrated and of whom he painted many portraits. He became painter to Henry VIII in 1535. Among his best paintings are George Gisze, The Ambassadors, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Erasmus, Sir Richard Southwell, and Sir Henry Wyatt. This painting, titled Portrait of a Man, has not been identified as to the actual figure Holbein was representing here. Holbein has left many portraits that have proved unidentifiable.
